How can i turn off notifications

  • Ron - The short answer to your question is that for the Beta, you can't.
The longer answer is that there are two types of notifications you might be asking about. The first are what we call "Auto-Toots" - these are the notices you send to your Priority Contacts and social networks to notify them when you start and stop driving. The second type of notifications are what we call "Auto-Replys". These are notifications we send to someone on your behalf when you're driving and receive a phone call (from a non-Priority caller) or an SMS. For the Beta, we did not put in an option for sending or not sending. For the production software, we'll be adding flexibility about who you want to send notifications to and under what circumstances.

Thanks for downloading ZoomSafer! Does that answer your question?

  • Kerry - Definitely shouldn't be sending out 100 in an hour - we're very sorry you're experiencing that. The application should send the notices out when you start/stop driving and when someone contacts you while you're driving. Would you mind answering a few questions for me:
    - What device/carrier do you have?
    - Are the notices the Auto-toots (e.g., I've started/stopped driving) or the Auto-Reply's ("Kerry is driving and will get back to you...")?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Ron - Stephen - Kerry:

Please accept my apologies for any confusion that exists surrounding auto-toots and auto-reply notifications. As you know, this is our initial beta -- and we would greatly appreciate your patience and partnership as we work through the wrinkles together.

To be clear, according to the design of the service, there are 2 scenarios in which your contacts will automatically receive notifications from ZoomSafer:

    1. Auto-Toots are sent when the application starts and stops to your 3 DESIGNATED priority contacts letting them know that you have started or stopped driving. This notification is configurable -- e.g. you can send email or text (or both) -- and you can also update status on Facebook and/or Twitter if you so choose.

    2. when you're driving -- ANYONE who attempts to contact you by "phone" or "text" will receive an automatic reply from the service letting them know that you're driving and that you will get back to them when you reach your destination safely. In the event someone sends you an "email" while you are driving the service DOES NOT send them an auto reply.

I do understand that the notifications could be annoying -- therefore, in order to minimize the number of notifications that your designated priority contacts receive you could log-in to www.myzoomsafer.com and go to the "notification tab" on your dashboard and make sure you have "email" OR "SMS" checked -- but NOT both. This will cut the number of notifications immediately by 50%.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: If you manually activate the app on your phone -- e.g. turn it "on" and "off" -- even though you;re not driving -- the service "thinks" you are driving and will send an auto-toot to your priority contacts.

Finally, this is exactly the type of feedback we're looking for from our beta users. We are grateful to hear what you think and we will learn quickly from this feedback to modify the service accordingly.

    I hope that is helpful.

Please contact me directly at matt@zoomsafer.com if you would like me to walk you through the service.

    sad I’m frustrated
Thanks Matt. My opinion, an auto-toot is not needed. My priority contacts only need to be notified that I'm driving IF they try to contact me. My friends have forwarded me the SMS text messages for both responses ... that I'm driving and that I'm a passenger while I was at home on my couch. I wasn't aware that by activating the software to test it, it would stop my calls from coming in even if I was not driving. I am a Verizon BB Curve user, so now that makes sense.

Either way, I don't see any value to the auto-toot at all.

hey ron any idea where the red box that says at-least 1 notification is required will be gone. I no its in beta and honestly i think this is by far one of the best betas i have demoed. but we all know that there will be problems with something. as much as i loved the program i temp took it off my phone as the notifications where driving my priority as well as facebook(found where to click it off) problems. otherwise i would like to extend my WOW in that you guys/girls did an amazing job in making this app and expect nothing less from a company like yours.

Kerry - Thanks for the kind words - we really appreciate the feedback good and bad but it's nice to know we're heading in the right direction.

FYI, we've decided to remove the requirement to send the start/stop driving notifications from the beta. There will be some individual users and parents who view it as a necessity but I think we're hearing that early adopters like yourself don't need the notifications to experience the software and drive less distracted.

Look for a separate announcement soon - they'll still be available but not required during the beta.

    Thanks again,
    Mike

silly I’m glad I figured THAT out....
ahhh. ... I see from this thread that I do not need to manually turn the app on and off every time I get into the car. It automatically senses the speed ?
ahh...that explains the extra notifications my contacts were getting at the time.!!! (I have since done a temp fix for that by routing those notifications to an email address we don't use for now)

    thanks !!!

Morning, Kerry - we need to a little bit of development on our side and then re-publish the website. You'll need to go back into your myzoomsafer.com profile and uncheck the boxes after that. I'll be posting an announcement later this morning telling people when to expect it.

    Thanks again,

I apologize if this has been said before, but i think contacts should only be notified if they try to reach the person driving with an auto reply.

The auto-toots are so annoying, but I will eagerly await for the update so this will go away ;-)

    Hi Shari:

No apologies necessary. Please keep the feedback coming.

We're working quickly to make auto-toot notifications purely optional. Hope to have something quickly.

    Thanks.

Hey there, Shari. Two things for you this morning:
    - Go about halfway up this thread for a detailed explanation of auto-toots and auto-replys. We auto-reply to calls and SMSs for you but not e-mails (e-mails will come in a later release).
    - Given all the feedback from yesterday, we've decided to not make Auto-toots mandatory. Look for an announcement later today about that.

    Thanks again,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

I'd really like to be able to turn off the auto-replies too. Hope this will be available in the full version.

    • William -

Thanks for trying out ZoomSafer! Two things for you:
      - We are going to make all Auto-replys optional in the next version of our Beta software which should be out in mid-October.
      - I'm curious to hear your perspective about them. Auto-replys to text messages have been pretty much the most popular feature in the entire product. Are you more concerned about auto-replys to text messages or phone calls.

      Thanks again,
      Mike

    Hi Mike,

I'm more concerned about auto-replies to text messages -- I haven't had any experience with the auto-replies to phone calls.

I'd like to be able to turn them off because, to be honest, I like to train my contacts not to expect an immediate reply from me to anything, whether or not I'm driving -- I find that the quality of my work suffers if I don't give myself time to think. It shouldn't make any difference to them whether I don't reply because I'm driving, because I'm in a meeting, or simply because I have to focus on something else right now. I understand that some people have a different approach and so all I'm asking for is the option to disable them.

One useful halfway house would be the ability to only send one auto-reply per driving session. That way contacts would know the driver was out of contact for a time, but wouldn't have their message inbox filled up with ZoomSafer auto-replies. I've had feedback from some of my contacts that they find that irritating.

Hope this is helpful. I like the service a lot and I think these minor inconveniences will be easy to iron out.
    • Thanks, William - this is just the type of perspective we're hoping to hear. In the next version of the Beta software (3 - 4 weeks), you'll be able to choose which communications to auto-reply to and none will be mandatory. I like the idea of one auto-reply per driving session as something to think about as well.

      Look for updates soon!

Wanted everyone to know that Beta Release 1.5 is here! All notifications that are described in this thread are optional. In the new registration process, you'll be asked to choose what you want to Auto-Reply to (Phone Calls, Text Messages, Emails). For the "Auto-Toot" start/stop driving notifications, the default from registration is that they are "off". If you'd like to use them, log on to http://www.myzoomsafer.com and go to Preferences/Start Stop.

    Safe Driving,
    Mike
